Misbelief: Generic wire services get me in GEN and FierceBiotech

with 2 comments

No generic wire service can guarantee that your press release will be published in GEN or FierceBiotech. After all, it’s still the editors who decide what is published.

GEN and Fierce are probably the most read publications in the biopharmaceutical industry. With over 200,000 print readers (GEN) and 90,000 newsletter subscribers (FierceBiotech), both trade media have a very high impact.

Generic wire services stream all press releases automatically into the websites of GEN and FierceBiotech since they belong to their network of syndicated websites. But unless the editors write a story, these postings are useless because they are 1) invisible to the website’s search functionality (FierceBiotech) and 2) are not automatically re-distributed through their highly valued newsletters and RSS feeds.

It is not the reputation of the generic wire service that gets you truly in GEN and FierceBiotech. It’s the quality of your press release that makes the difference!

  1. I came to this conclusion because I couldn’t think of a reason other than news syndication why FierceBiotech would have two sections on the website with the same stories (“Press Releases” and “News”). Thanks for clarifying this!

  2. Thanks for mentioning our coverage of the industry. Just to set the record straight, wire services don’t automatically stream press releases to FierceBiotech. I’m not sure about GEN. Typically, only releases for stories on which we report are posted on our sites. You are right that we choose which stories to cover, though.
